By popular request, we'll be baking more than one thing together this week. At first it was to be one thing but let's be a little more ambitious.
I posted the following on Twitter and FaceBook today:
"pssst - if you go grocery shopping, pick up some rye flour and wheat flour and meet me back here on Monday"
For wheat flour I use King Arthur all purpose but it doesn't matter.
I've gotten enough feedback that I want to expand the shopping list a bit and we'll cook/bake more next week.
You'll also need a little bit of honey.
People asked, "what are we making?"
We're making two kinds of sourdough starters.
They take a while to grow - so in the meantime let's make a couple of items we can eat right away.
We'll make pancakes one morning, so that those of you who have never baked get the feel of bringing ingredients together into something.
For the pancakes, in addition to the all purpose flour, you'll need eggs (usually large eggs), milk, baking powder, salt (I use Kosher Salt), sugar, and butter. You may also want some non-stick spray or oil for cooking. Don't sweat it if you have a different kind of flour, salt, or whatever. It will still be delicious.
Finally, towards the end of the week we'll make a simple bread using the all purpose flour, salt, and yeast (I prefer instant yeast but any baking yeast will be fine)
Anyone with me?
So the shopping list is rye flour, all purpose flour, honey, eggs, milk, baking powder, salt, sugar, butter, and yeast.
See you soon.
